A Parent's Perspective

The following is an email sent by a parent who's been through it all, and is passing the knowledge to a rising senior player who wants to continue.

Note that I talked with your mom about you going on to play in college. When I heard that you're holding down an  excellent gpa it opened up whole new doors. And I told her some of this. First, don't be afraid to apply to these private schools somewhere out east that seem to cost way too much. My son (with a gpa less than yours) applied and, when accepted, was immediately offered a $10,000 per year academic scholarship. Once you get that, you're back in the range of going to UW-Madison, which is reasonably affordable. To look for schools with lacrosse programs, try finding the schools from this link: http://www.ncaasports.com/lacrosse/mens (courtesy of Tom Darcy, West coach).

And don't discount UW-Madison. First, it's a great school, worthy of your gpa. Second, they have a very good club team, with Hal Rosenberg as coach. They just haven't chosen to move to USLIA or MDIA yet, which would be very competitive. Instead, they play in the Great Lakes Lacrosse League to reduce travel and cost. But it's some very good lacrosse.

But if you want to get your name in front of people who can make a difference, you really ought to go to a summer camp like Notre Dame or Denver - though I'm sure there are others. My son went to Notre Dame one year, then Denver the last two summers. It was at Denver that he was noticed by coach Jamie Munroe. Munroe worked him heavily, videotaping while he did. He sent the tape to one of his friends, another lax coach that follows the same offensive strategy. Munroe told my son that he should probably play D3 for a couple years to get field time, then see if he wanted to move to D1.

So going to a camp is one strategic move. Also, have videotape available. Your coach got tape from many games this year, which should help. Prepare something you could send out. This was a shortfall in our recruiting process - we didn't have any good tape/film.

And something else that helped my son immensely: He constantly helped Tom Darcy in the youth clinics, and developed Tom as an ally. Tom was instrumental as a reference for him, providing letters of recommendation. You need to find someone (other than but as well as your own coach) who will put in a good word for you. I might recommend offering to help at the youth clinics by LacrosseAmerica this summer - Phil Ryan, director, could be that ally for you.

This is a lot at once. Digest this and start putting together a plan, with your parents involvement, to find schools of interest. I'll gladly help with any other questions you may have on the process of college selection.
